What can we do with a very excited, active Golden Retriever that is always jumping up on our visitors or chewing on their clothing? It has been researched that the average dog, Golden Retrievers included, will become increasingly aggressive in jumping and chewing if they do not have a regular play schedule with individuals.

No matter if you are Golden Retriever training or any other breed, preventing these habits is the best course of action. Firstly, you must keep in mind that puppies and dogs could be drawn towards long sleeves on clothing or any hanging items on clothing. It is best to keep yourself and your visitors outfits tight fitting and to tuck anything that loosely hangs. For women, it might also be best to tie back their hair if it is extremely long.

One commonly used strategy when dealing with a Golden Retriever that acts up is to completely stand still and act as a statue. Avoid eye contact with the dog. If the dog nips at your clothing, give a sharp NO in very serious tone. Keep in mind that once your dog does as you say and shows correct behavior, you should show them attention. Only take your attention away when they misbehave.

This same strategy can also be applied if your dog is an ankle biter, finger biter, or bites any other body part. You must discourage your Golden Retriever from wanting to bite or nip. It can assist you in showing them that it hurts if you give out a yip that you might hear from them if they were hurt. After doing this, ignore your dog. This gives them the thinking that if they do not behave, they will not get attention at all. Keep in mind it is not recommended to holler at your dog when they bite. They may become more confused and equally agitated.

When trying to teach your Golden Retriever not to nip at clothing or bite at skin, it is best if you wear some old clothing. This will help you in protecting your good clothing. Another idea you can try is to tell your dog to do something else. When you use this method and the dog listens, you will have to give them a treat to show they did as you asked. This helps to divert their attention away from biting and onto the new subject.

If these options do not seem to help you, there is always option number three. This is the timeout method. You can place your dog in a separate room for a short amount of time, say, about a minute. In some instances this works quite well in getting the dogs to stop jumping and biting. Remember, don't leave the dog in the room too long. They will not remember why they were placed in there.

Please note that in Golden Retriever Training, it is never a good thing to place your dog in a crate for a timeout. If you do this, it will negate all of your crate training as the dog will only think negative on the crate in the future. Instead use another room with a door such as a bathroom or a laundry room.

Try to occupy your dog with other things could be helpful. Practice the commands like sit and stay and give them a treat after they do it. This helps them from jumping on you from being excited that they did right.
