Some rescue groups will have verified that their dogs have good behavior through foster homes. Adult dogs are will also be easier to train if needed. Also, if you visit a shelter or rescue group, you will be able to more easily tell which dogs would be suitable to be your pet, whereas with a puppy it is not as obvious. A puppy may not clearly show the personality that it will have as an adult, even though it will be energetic and require a lot of attention.
