What can we do with a very excited, active Golden Retriever that is always jumping up on our visitors or chewing on their clothing? It has been researched that the average dog, Golden Retrievers included, will become increasingly aggressive in jumping and chewing if they do not have a regular play schedule with individuals.

No matter if you are Golden Retriever training or any other breed, preventing these habits is the best course of action. Firstly, you must keep in mind that puppies and dogs could be drawn towards long sleeves on clothing or any hanging items on clothing. It is best to keep yourself and your visitors outfits tight fitting and to tuck anything that loosely hangs. For women, it might also be best to tie back their hair if it is extremely long.

One commonly used strategy when dealing with a Golden Retriever that acts up is to completely stand still and act as a statue. Avoid eye contact with the dog. If the dog nips at your clothing, give a sharp NO in very serious tone. Keep in mind that once your dog does as you say and shows correct behavior, you should show them attention. Only take your attention away when they misbehave.

This same strategy can also be applied if your dog is an ankle biter, finger biter, or bites any other body part. You must discourage your Golden Retriever from wanting to bite or nip. It can assist you in showing them that it hurts if you give out a yip that you might hear from them if they were hurt. After doing this, ignore your dog. This gives them the thinking that if they do not behave, they will not get attention at all. Keep in mind it is not recommended to holler at your dog when they bite. They may become more confused and equally agitated.

When trying to teach your Golden Retriever not to nip at clothing or bite at skin, it is best if you wear some old clothing. This will help you in protecting your good clothing. Another idea you can try is to tell your dog to do something else. When you use this method and the dog listens, you will have to give them a treat to show they did as you asked. This helps to divert their attention away from biting and onto the new subject.

If these options do not seem to help you, there is always option number three. This is the timeout method. You can place your dog in a separate room for a short amount of time, say, about a minute. In some instances this works quite well in getting the dogs to stop jumping and biting. Remember, don't leave the dog in the room too long. They will not remember why they were placed in there.

Please note that in Golden Retriever Training, it is never a good thing to place your dog in a crate for a timeout. If you do this, it will negate all of your crate training as the dog will only think negative on the crate in the future. Instead use another room with a door such as a bathroom or a laundry room.

Try to occupy your dog with other things could be helpful. Practice the commands like sit and stay and give them a treat after they do it. This helps them from jumping on you from being excited that they did right.

When you first bring home your Golden Retriever, that is when you should begin training them. Don't wait. Getting started immediately will help in your expedient success! This article will give you some helpful tips on how to go about doing this.

We all love how adorable and cute Golden Retriever puppies are. We just want to cuddle and play with them immediately upon seeing them. On top of cuddling and playing with your new puppy, you should begin training them too. You must remember that your new puppy is much the same as a baby. Just as a baby is easily distracted, so it your puppy, but this does not mean that your puppy is not trainable. It is now you should begin showing your puppy regular routines for them to become accustomed to. This will assist you in your whole training process.

Bringing Your New Puppy Home

The training of your Golden Retriever should start immediately after bringing your new puppy home. Firstly you should show your new bundle of love where his/her food or water will be and where it is okay for him to go to the bathroom when you are not taking him outside. It is also important to stress where your new puppy will be sleeping. Along with showing him/her where they will sleep, you need to start them on a schedule of when it is okay to sleep so as not to keep you up all night long. Getting a regular sleeping schedule under control right away is key to assisting in your successful training, not to mention...making sure you get your sleep when you need it also.

Everything is a Chew Toy!

One of the main things you need to address immediately is your puppy's natural urge to chew on things. Make sure you have provided enough chew toys for your puppy. When purchasing these toys, make sure that they are puppy safe and that he/she cannot chew them up and eat anything that might be harmful to them. Puppy proofing your house is essential! You must keep an eye on your new pup so when they do grab onto something that they shouldn't chew up, you can correct them and give them one of their toys. Make sure you sharply say NO when you catch them chewing upon something they shouldn't. They will understand this tone. Be consistent in your training and things will go along much smoother. It is even more important to give them praise for their good behavior. Keep in mind that they are young and will no doubt go back and do something they aren't supposed to. Just correct them again and keep it on track.

Leash Training

Leash training can also begin at this point in training your Golden Retriever. Begin around the house to help your puppy get comfortable with being on the leash before going out. It is very easy to just let him get a handle on having a collar and leash on in your own backyard. Once he has become familiar with these two items, pick up the leash and call out your puppy's name. When he comes to you, make sure that you give him lots of love and cuddles to show he/she did good. If you put the leash on your puppy every time you go to take him out back, he will begin to understand that the leash is associated with time to go out.

The above tips should assist in getting your Golden Retriever training underway. Granted, there are many other tips that I have not covered, but keep in mind that with all training should come your consistency. Make sure to appreciate good behavior and always praise. This will help as they grow older to want to please and obey you in all things.

About Golden Retriever: Things you should know before taking this four legged creature home

So these Goldens are cute, furry and intelligent. What else do you have to know?

Lord Tweedmouth of Scotland bred the first documented Golden Retriever in the British Isles during the late 1800s. Golden retriever is a cross-breed of the Tweed Water Spaniel and the retriever. These dogs were used predominantly for hunting waterfowl and are therefore excellent hunting companions.

Golden Retriever is known to be the most loyal and even-tempered dogs. This breed was exported to America in 1925 and has since been dominant in the AKC competitions. Being Intelligent, gentle, trainable and excellent hunters; Golden retriever is the first dog to win an AKC obedience championship. This breed has the lowest school dropouts owing to their inherent intelligence and eagerness to please.

Golden Retrievers are prone to health problems like cataracts, hip, and elbow dysplasia, arthritis, cancer and even Epilepsy. Cataracts affect dogs in the same way that it affects human. However, this eye disease may be treated with surgery. Hip and elbow dysplasia is a crippling disease that causes an elbow or hip joint not to fit properly in its socket. It left unattended, this disease can develop into arthritis in later life. Cancer in dogs is like the cancer in human beings. There is no cure for this disease but both conventional and homeopathic remedies may be employed. However, these diseases can be prevented by regular check ups and immediate medication.

These dogs are highly focused and owners should monitor this trait closely. Golden retrievers can focus on their work; work too much and for too long that they may end up wearing themselves out. It is also possible for them to focus on eating and end up overweight or obese. Hence, owners must monitor their dog’s activities and food intake.

When buying golden retrievers, you should ask for credible references. Ask breeders questions about Goldens to see how much they know about this dog. Good breeders ought to have expertise on their breed and should be able to answer questions in an informative manner.

These dogs are highly intelligent, friendly, obedient and are excellent hunting companions. They are the best dogs for children because they are patient. Like any other dogs, Golden retriever needs a responsible owner. This dog needs regular exercise and proper diet.

Consider these facts about golden retrievers before you decide to take one home.

Golden Retriever Training – The Breed Makes it Easy

About the Breed
People everywhere are drawn to the wonderful attributes of golden retrievers. They are one of the best dogs to have around people, and bond with humans like few other breeds do. They are also called ‘Golden,’ ‘Yellow Retrievers,’ or ‘Goldies,’ and have many characteristics that endear them to people and make golden retriever training easier than training many other breeds. They are smart, loving, loyal, good tempered, and look great. They have an expression that makes them appear to be smiling, and a beautiful color to their fur (which gives them their name, of course).

These dogs have been around since the late 19th century, when the breed was started in Scotland. This makes them a fairly new breed. They were bred to assist sportsmen, a job at which they still can excel. Their pleasant nature and temperament has made them suitable for many tasks. They are often seen as drug sniffing dogs and seeing eye dogs. Proper golden retriever training makes these feats possible.

The golden retriever’s pleasant disposition makes them a joy to be around. These dogs definitely enjoy the company of people. It is best if a golden retriever is not left alone for extended periods of time (meaning days or weeks), because they will become bored.

Health Issues
Golden retrievers aren’t a delicate breed of dog, but unfortunately, there are several health problems that you should be aware of. These include dysplasia (hip and elbow), eye disease, and heart disease. Acquiring a dog from a reputable breeder helps reduce the likelihood of these problems. A breeder should be diligent in planning their litters and screening the puppies that they sell. Some breeders are more interested in quick profits than in maintaining the health of the breed, and regrettably not all dogs have the pleasant temperament that buyers want.

Training your puppy
Golden retriever training is not only necessary, but it can be enjoyable as well. Like any puppy, this breed can be very energetic, but the rewards of training and socialization are worth the effort. Golden retrievers are more trainable than many other breeds, but using mainly positive reinforcement and praise is the best approach. Golden retriever training, from learning basic commands to house training, requires patience, but will pay off with having a dog that will be an excellent companion.

Golden Retriever Puppy Training is as easy as 1-2-3.

Like all human beings, dogs are creatures of habit. It is therefore imperative to start your Golden Retriever Puppy training as soon as your Golden pup begins to understand. As soon as your puppy is 2-month old his training should begin.

Golden Retriever Puppy Training should start from that very day when your golden pup begins to comprehend simple commands. In most cases, this is as soon as your pup turns two-month old. To begin training your Golden Retriever, it is best to be aware of your dog's common “problem areas”.

Is your puppy chewing on things? Barking indiscriminately? Does he refuse to let go of his feeding bowl? Is your puppy inattentive? Completely oblivious of what you want him to do? Here are some basic fix for your Golden's common problems:

Problem 1:

He's so cute but he chews on things- Golden Retriever like all puppies love to chew when they are young; more so, when they are teething. Teething can be painful so they chew to ease the pain.

The Fix:

There are many chew toys that you can buy for your pup. However, you can improvise and give him an old sock to chew on instead. The pain caused by teething will be minimized and you don't have to spend extra for the chew toy. However, do not leave your puppy to chew alone. He may end up swallowing pieces of that old sock.

Problem 2:

My Golden Pup digs everywhere!- Dogs love to dig by nature. But of course, you wouldn't want your Golden pup to dig indiscriminately. Not in your flower pot or all over your back yard.

The Fix:

Designate a digging place for your Golden Retriever. Allow him to go digging in that designated area and should he start digging outside of that area, tell him off. This way, your pup can gradually understand not to mention form a habit of digging in one area alone.

Problem 3:

My Golden Pup nips - Golden Retrievers learn about the world through their mouth. That’s why they nip and mouth at their families.

The Fix:

If you want to discourage nipping early on, a firm voice and removal of your hands will be enough. Replace your hand or feet with a toy and if your pet persist, recourse to a firm “no” or “enough”. This usually controls his behaviour.

Problem 4:

He barks during play time and barks at anyone- Golden retrievers are quiet dogs. That is their nature. However, you can unknowingly encourage his barking and growling.

The Fix:

Do not bark or growl first at your Golden Retriever when playing with him. Otherwise, you will encourage him to bark and growl at anyone, anytime. If you want your Golden Retriever to bark when a stranger walks through your door- don't sweat it. It will come naturally.

Problem 5:

He refuses to let go of his eating bowl.

The Fix:

A Proper Golden Retriever Puppy Training requires that You and your family should acquaint your Golden Retriever with his eating bowl and train him to let it go after eating. You can do this early on by holding his bowl as he eats and giving him a toy after eating. Sooner or later, his habit will form. That is; to let go of the bowl after eating.

You can train your Golden Retriever puppy all by yourself .

Here's How!

This way, you can learn how to train your Golden retriever Properly and he will learn well. Remember: A proper Golden Retriever Puppy Training makes a good Dog.

History
Golden retriever information and history - the golden retriever came to exist as a breed sometime in the early 19th century. At the time, hunting firearms had improved to the point that bird hunters were bringing down more birds further away than before, especially in water or other areas difficult for a hunter to reach. Existing breeds of dogs such as the pointers and setters were not very capable at retrieving birds in these conditions, so the golden retriever was developed to fill this niche.

Golden retrievers were created in Scotland by a Baron Tweedmouth when he interbred sporting dogs such as retrievers, spaniels, Irish setters, bloodhounds, and other dogs. His intention was to create a perfect hunting dog that was energetic and powerful, but was good natured and easy to train. Before 1920, the breed was known as golden flat coats, or golden and yellow retrievers. The Golden Retriever Club of America started in 1938.

Characteristics
Golden retrievers have a soft mouth so they can retrieve birds and other game without damaging them. They love water and are very good at retrieving game from water. They are known for their good temperament. They are patient with children and friendly with everyone. This makes them unsuitable for being guard dogs. They are confident and have a desire to please.

Golden retrievers are very trainable and are able to learn many commands. They are one of the most intelligent breed of dogs. They are able to sit quietly for extended periods of time, since they were bred to be able to wait patiently in hunting blinds. These dogs are very good at obedience and agility competitions. They are hard working and focused; so much so that an owner should make sure they don’t overwork their dog. The dogs respond well to praise and positive reinforcement and don’t require much negative training.

This is just a small sampling of the large amount of golden retriever information that is available.

Golden Retriever Info for Beginners

Golden retriever info for beginners! Golden retrievers were first bred in the UK. They were bred from other types of retrievers, spaniels, and setters. The golden retriever is considered to be a ‘gun dog’ or ‘sporting’ dog. This breed has a medium length coat which varies from creamy to gold colored. A red coat is not correct. It has both an outer coat and a dense undercoat. Its muzzle has a stop, a definite scissors type bite, black nose, dark rimmed brown eyes, and medium ears. The breed has a long straight tail, and a muscular neck and thighs.

The golden retriever is suitable for being around children, is highly intelligent and charming, as well as being easy to train. These dogs are friendly, active, and make a good pet for families. They do not have much instinct for guarding, but are good watchdogs, and will bark when strangers come around. Owners should show the dog leadership. Due to their intelligence, golden retrievers need daily mental and physical activity to avoid boredom. They are good at swimming, obedience and agility competition, hunting, tracking and retrieving, and have been used to detect narcotics. They also have made seeing eye dogs, service dogs for disabled people, and therapy dogs. When used in hunting, they do well as bird dogs and trackers, and have an excellent sense of smell. Golden retriever info is widely available due to their popularity.

Some potential health problems to watch out for are include heart problems, skin allergies, hip dysplasia, and eye defects. Overfeeding will lead to weight gain.

A yard is best for these dogs, but they can live in an apartment if they get enough exercise. Walking or running daily, or chasing and retrieving toys will help them stay in shape.

Golden retrievers should be brushed regularly with a firm brush, especially brushing the undercoat. They shed an average amount. They should be dry shampooed regularly, but given a bath only as needed. Hopefully this golden retriever info has been helpful.

Golden Retriever Health problems are most likely treatable. Since most of these diseases are hereditary, it is best for a golden owner like you to closely monitor your pet's health. Watch out for signs and symptoms and give your dog immediate and proper care. To understand more about these diseases, here the facts about the most common Golden Retriever Health Problems:

Golden Retrievers can get cataract in the same way every human can. This Eye defect may be found on a routine eye check up and can be removed through surgery if your dog is healthy.

Hip and Elbow Dysplasia

Dysplasia is a crippling disease that can cause a hip or an elbow not to fit properly in its socket. This can lead to a degenerative joint disease which causes more pain and limits the mobility of your Golden Retriever. If left untended. This disease can develop into Arthritis in later life.

Arthritis

Arthritis affects Golden Retrievers in the same way that it affects Human. This disease makes the movement of your pet difficult and may be treated with injectable pain killers. This may be administered at home or at any veterinary clinic. Giving your Golden a warm bath is also a good way to ease the pain in his joints.

Cancer

Golden Retrievers often face cancer of the blood and cancer of the lymphatic system. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this disease. Both conventional medicine and homeopathic remedies may be employed depending on your which you think is best for your dog.

Epilepsy

Prevention is better than a Cure

The best way to prevent these health problems is to properly screen the dogs before they mate. To be certain, you can ask your breeder to produce the necessary documents and even provide for an x-ray result. Most reputable breeders update the document and x-ray records of their dogs every 18 months.

Golden Retriever Grooming – How to Get Started

Golden retriever grooming is something that every owner should become familiar with. An owner should begin grooming their puppy even before they need it so that they become used to it. Feathery coated dogs definitely need daily grooming to prevent matting, but smooth coated dogs also need grooming since their undercoat can become matted as well. Expect to spend a half hour per day grooming a feathery coated dog, and a half hour per week for a smooth coated dog. Trimming the fur should be done as needed, after brushing is done.

To avoid matting, daily brushing becomes especially necessary when a golden retriever is shedding. A feathery coated dog definitely requires daily brushing. Matting attracts fleas, and a mat becomes more of a problem the longer it is left unaddressed. Water makes a mat even worse.

Taking care of matted fur requires a wide toothed comb, oil or detangling conditioner, a mat breaker, or possibly rounded scissors, depending on if you choose to untangle the mat or cut it away. Use the comb by starting at the edges of the mat. Use the conditioner to untangle the mat, or use a mat breaker or scissors to cut it away. It is best to groom your dog regularly so that you can avoid matting.

You also need to have a slicker brush and a pin brush for golden retriever grooming. Before giving your dog a bath, you should brush him completely, because mats and tangles will become worse otherwise. You should use regular water instead of soap to wash his legs and underside after brushing dirt out, so that his undercoat will stay healthy.

More basic golden retriever grooming includes checking your dog’s skin using a flea comb, and cleaning his ears and nails weekly, trimming nails as needed. Using pet nail trimmers, only cut a small amount away at a time. Cutting too much risks injuring your dog (just like trimming a person’s nails), and it will be more difficult for him to let you trim them again.
